Spinal Position/Posture and Disease Progression in Ankylosing Spondylitis
5/24/2004
In severe cases of AS, some people may experience deterioration in spinal posture. When this is coupled with spinal fusion, the spine might fuse solidly in a stooped-forward position. The actual cause of the postural change is unknown, but a recent study examining spinal position in 27 patients with mild ankylosing spondylitis set out to shed some light on this subject.
Over time, the patients showed a significant increase in disease activity and loss in spinal mobility. However, no significant changes in spinal posture were found. Thus, the study concluded that spinal position appears unaffected by disease progression in patients with mild AS. The study also stated that longer follow-ups may help determine any associations between disease-related postural change and spinal position in AS.
Posture & Exercise
Practicing good posture and having an exercise program are both integral parts of a spondylitis treatment program. Many benefits can come from exercising each day. A spondylitis exercise program will help you maintain good posture, flexibility and eventually help to lessen pain associated with AS.
